Superb conceptual jazz album from East London pianist, composer and producer Alfa Mist that centres around conversations with his sister and includes collaborations with Jordan Rakai and Kaya Thomas-Dyke. There’s a generally laid back feel to the set that gradually unfurls and reveals depth – check the slow build ‘Mulago’ that brings to mind elements of Mammal hands or the soulful ‘Falling’ for contrast. ‘Glad I Lived’ rides on a languid beat with touches of brass ebbing and flowing on this semi-ambient gem while ‘Door’ has a more skittering beat gently lifts off into crescendo. Strong, accomplished album. Another side of contemporary British Jazz.
