]]> We are thrilled to say that Sy Smith’s new album ‘Until We Meet Again’ is finally in stock! Apologies for the delays on this but we will be hoping ship all orders in the coming days. The album is a fantastic continuation from her previous work so don’t hesitate in getting a copy as they won’t be around for long. We have Citrus Sun’s new album ‘Anaconga’ now in on vinyl as well as a Barbara Randolph 45 ‘I Got A Feeling’ and two classic sevens from Leon Thomas and Gary Bartz. There’s also Fatback Band ‘Let’s Do It Again,’ Ruby Andrew’s 1972 album ‘Black Ruby’ and ‘Malik’ from the Lafayette Afro Rock Band. Nighttime Lovers next is edition is in stock plus a brilliant Spinners boxset and also a nice ‘Cloud Nine’ 12 inch as well as two 45s on Panorama UK.

This adds to the list from last week of 60s soul 45s which you can see here if you missed, and we also added to our series of 12″ singles with part 15. We featured the first batch of 25 Original Vinyl Soul LPs from a large new collection that we will be purchasing over the next year, there are some great hard to find albums;  quite a few sold out immediately and we have added a few where there were second copies to the list. Watch out for a batch of rare and classic Jazz and Jazz Funk albums coming soon.
As always we have a brilliant selection of original LPs and 12s that have been added to the site in recent weeks. This week we added some brilliant original soul LPs in addition to the batches of Philly Soul and Classic Soul we put up recently, plus two new batches of 12″ singles for funk, disco and house fans check them out here and here. This is part of a larger group of 12″ singles from a recent collection into one group which you can view here. There’s also two great selections of jazz-fusion albums all at £10 each, see them here and here. There is another great feature on soul and funk LPs which you can see here, in addition to a new batch of 12″ singles plus a cracking list of Jazz-Funk LPs here. Spiritual Jazz 16 - RiversideSpiritual Jazz 16 is a focus on Riverside and its associated sister labels. Riverside itself was founded in 1953 by Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer, and became an important purveyor in that decade and beyond of what would be marketed as of modern jazz. That coinage was itself an amorphous, umbrella term that essentially created a demarcation from the vocabulary of pre-war classic jazz and inter-war big band swing, thus recognizing that improvising artists were breaking new creative ground that would subsequently give rise to a flurry of sub-genres, for example bebop, hard bop, cool, modal and Latin jazz. And it’s from this multiplicity of sub-genres that we choose the deepest, most vibrant selections that the vast, pan-generational catalogue of Keepnews & Grauer has to offer.

]]> There are some good new releases, reissues and restocks this week. The latest reissue 45 on the Soul Brother label Edwin Starr northern soul classic  ‘Time’ b/w the x-over Modern Soul ‘Running Back And Forth’ is an excellent double A side record, epitomises the early 70’s Motown sound.

UK independent artist Nye Banfield has made a new Jazz album based on the classic mid to late 60’s Blue Note sound a la Andrew Hill/Bobby Hutcherson. Catpak is a new group ft members from Moonchild and we are back in stock of the hard to find Thee Sinseers CD. Volume 16 of the excellent Spiritual Jazz series focuses on the Riverside Label. Miles Away releases their first compilation ‘Miles Away – One’ featuring lesser known Soul and obscure grooves. There are some great reissues on vinyl including three long overdue Sade albums and compilations of Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack and we are back in stock of many great LP and 45 titles. There is an 8 CD Salsoul Orchestra set covering the Vince Montana years plus good comps of Freddie Scott and Johnny Adams. We also have CDs of Harlem River Drive and Ramp back in on Japanese Reissue.

]]> Edwin Starr was a Northern Soul hero, noted for his Ric Tic and Gordy/Tamla Motown recordings in the mid to late 60s. He is best known for his international chart topper ‘War’ a Vietnam War protest song from 1970. These two sides are from the same album ‘War And Peace’ ‘Time’ has been one of Edwin’s most in demand Northern Soul dancers for many decades and certain issues of original copies have sold for over £250. In more recent times the flip side ‘Running Back And Forth’ has been played and is demand on the Northern Soul/Crossover Soul scene making this a great value 45 with two brilliant tracks in demand in their own right, which epitomise the era. This is the first time this record has been reissued in nearly 40 years.

]]> There are some great new releases, reissues and restocks this week. Bluey’s Jazzier group Citrus Sun release their excellent fifth album ‘Anaconga’ on CD , the LP due in two weeks. Don Glori has a fantastic second album ‘Don’t Forget To Have Fun’ excellent new funky jazz. Sugaray Rayford has a new southern soul/blues album and Mr Bongo reissue Junior Parker ‘Love Ain’t Nothing But A Business Goin On’ from the Groove Merchant vaults including the rare groove ‘Taxman’. There is also a 180gm analogue Acoustic Sounds LP version of Billie Holiday Body And Soul. Plenty of restocks of great albums this week including some we haven’t seen for a while such as Durand Jones And The Indications and Kelly Finnegan.

Please accept our apologies for the delay in the Sy Smith LP due this week but delayed in UK customs, it should arrive next week, and orders will be fulfilled the day it arrives. ]]> Anaconga (pre-order due 14 June)Citrus Sun is Bluey’s Jazzier group and ‘Anaconga’ their fifth album is a mixture of covers and original material featuring some great musicians as you would expect. The album has a real feel good vibe throughout. ‘Mister Mellow’ is a nice laid back cover of a Maynard Ferguson track featuring Kevin Robinson on trumpet. Erykah Badu’s ‘Honey’ is given a jazzier groove and features Natalie Duncan on vocals. Ronnie Foster’s much sampled mid tempo jazz funk groove ‘Mystic Brew’ is given a slightly lusher treatment ft Graham Harvey on keyboards, then the tempo rises midway as Charlie Allen on guitar and Dominic Glover on Flugelhorn take solos. Homage is given to singer songwriter Bobby Caldwell on ‘Down For The Third Time’ and ‘The Boy Beneath The Sea’ is an uptempo instrumental, ‘In Search Of The Blue Note’ is a jazzier mid tempo groove inspired by New York City’s jazz history and nightlife being the highlights of the new material.

 

The slightly quirky groove ‘Sing To My Beat’ features Deborah Bond and Tony Momrelle on background vocals and ad libs. ‘Santiago’ ft Rega Duana on harmonica and Glover on trumpet, which has a South American feel. Strong and very well produced album which
will appeal to Bluey’s many fans.

]]> Dont Forget To Have Fun (pre-order due 14 June)Multi instrumentalist Don Glori (Gordon Li) hails from Melbourne Australia but is now based in London. His second album ‘Don’t Forget To Have Fun’ released on the Deep Matter label is a great follow up to his excellent debut ‘Welcome’ and recorded with
some of Melbourne’s finest Jazz musicians. Don plays keyboards, piano, basses and percussion. ‘Emerald’ is a lovely 9 minute multi paced track that starts out slow and moody then builds into a Jazz Funk groove then changes pace again. It features some nice sax playing from Lachlan Thompson and tight horn riffs over Glori’s keys and a steady beat from drummer Tim Cox. ‘All Seeds’ is a Brazilian samba groove that shuffles along nicely. ‘First Touch’ is more down tempo which like Emerald and All Seeds illustrates a strong Azymuth influence. The three part track ‘Theme For A Dream’ features vocals from Hannah McKittrick and Bianca Kyriacou. Very nice album from a rising star.
