With all the gloom and doom ‘World Coming To An End’ movies that have come out the last couple years, it’s nice to see somebody take a comedic look at the whole thing. SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD looks like it will be that kind of rare story.
A guy named Dodge, like everybody else, is going through the motions of life when life doesn’t matter anymore. It doesn’t matter because in the film an asteroid scientist named ‘Matilda’ will destroy the earth in 3 weeks. What are you supposed to do, run around hysterically, or keep going to your job? Or maybe find that first High School love that you had. That’s pretty much the plan for Dodge, and his new found friend Penny.
Lorene Scafaria, who wrote another script with an elongated title – NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST, was the writer and first time director of SEEKING A FRIEND. The two films almost have the same structure I assume, both being kind of those ‘travel to find something’ type of stories. The hilarious master of the dead-pan face Steve Carell plays Dodge, and Keira Knightley is his road companion Penny. I don’t know if I will make my way out to see the film. But If I do, I’ll be sure to give you my take on it.
SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD comes out today, June 22.
