Syfy Channel: ALPHAS

ALPHAS on Syfy Channel

Alphas is awesome!  I watched the third episode and I’m a believer.  Who am I kidding, I loved this show after the first 10 minutes of the FIRST episode.

The characters were introduced beautifully.  Within minutes you knew what kind of persons they were, what their powers were and how they interacted with family and others.  What I like is that it’s an interesting team of misfits that are just starting to know each other.  We get that they’ve been on a couple crime solving missions before episode 1, but they still are not comfortable with each other.

First off there is Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn), a psychiatrist and leader of the Alphas.  He knows all about Alpha humans but is a bit of a hippy.  Then there’s Bill Harken (Malik Yoba).  He’s married, an FBI agent, and his power is super strength activated by the ‘Fight or Flight’ response.  I thought the whole super strong black guy thing has been over done, but he makes it work. Following Harken is Nina Theroux (Laura Mennell).  She gives new meaning to a captivating look.  She breaks down a person’s will and makes them do almost anything.  And then there is a sure favorite of the show, Gary Bell (Ryan Cartwright).  He seems to suffer from Autism, but that doesn’t stop him or his power to see all electro-magnetic frequencies in mid-air.  He reads radio, tv and any other signal like we read a paper.  And just as cool a character is Rachel Pirzad (Azita Ghanizada) who can enhance any one of her 5 senses, but when one is enhanced, the others go dull.  Last to join the team was Cameron Hicks (Warren Christie).  He has superhuman hand/eye coordination.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t kick in 100 percent of the time.  But he’s learning.

Harken, Theroux, Dr. Rosen and Hicks - ALPHAS

The writers seem to be doing a good job of layering the characters with personal and professional difficulties.  And, in the first episode they set up the beginnings of a conspiracy involving other Alphas used to do evil things.  The action, pacing and dialog worked well together and the acting isn’t bad at all.  I would have loved if HEROES evolved into something like this.  I would have loved if HEROES evolved into anything!  But that’s another post topic, isn’t it?

ALPHAS comes on Mondays at 10/9c on the Syfy channel.  Check it out when you get a chance.  Geek Soul Brother gives it a MARTIAN AFRO-PICK Approval!
