Deadline.com is reporting that Sony Pictures has brought on Josh Trank to direct SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS - the movie. I was glad to hear they were even making one. It’s based on that classic video game where you have to take down towering giants. I’m not a gamer as some of you might know, but I don’t mind a movie based on a game.
Sony’s decision is obviously because of the box office success of CHRONICLE, which earned almost $65 Million in the USA alone, but only cost $15 Million to make, putting Trank on the radar for profit-making directors of superhuman stuff. Trank seems to be the current go to guy when it comes to super incredible themed properties. He’s already part of the next Fantastic Four project by Twentieth Century Fox. And he’s working with Sony on a Spider-Man spin-off Venom story (Ah Ha Raimi, you can’t kill Venom that easily).
Trank is still a new kid on the block as far as movies go. But I liked the originality he showed in Chronicle. I’m sure he can do something really interesting with a decent sized budget.
The SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS story is about a hero that thinks his lover is dead. The hero makes a deal with a demon to bring her back if he can kill these sixteen giants that are messing up things in the mystical world. Frankly, I don’t know what all the giant hatin’ is about, but a hero has to do what a hero has to do.
I liked CHRONICLE, though I had a few problems with the ending. But I think my favorite of Josh Trank’s work is this… oh, there’s cursing so this maybe nsfw…
