Scream-A-Day No.24 – TALES FROM THE HOOD (1995)

Tales from the Dark Side, Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the… HOOD?  Yes, it’s the horror that “takes you to the Outer Limits of the Inner City” as writer / director Rusty Cundieff and writer Darin Scott gives us four scary shorts centered on characters of the Afro persuasion.

Each tale was a bit more moralistic than something you might see in Tales from the Crypt.  But they still worked as far as entertaining you with some ghostly stories.  Clarence Williams III was this film’s version of the crypt keeper.  You young heads may not remember Mod Squad, with Williams being one of three young cops.  In ‘Hood’ he drops the cop and picks up the crazy as a funeral home director with his customers having interesting histories.  When Williams as Mr. Simms is threatened by three thugs he recounts what each corpse died from.

I haven’t seen this film in a while, but the one short I remember is with all the small dolls that came to life.  See, stuff like that goes right to the top of the list of scary things, along with little horror movie ghost kids.

With the small collection of black horror films, this is probably seconded in popularity only by BLACKULA.  It was good to see executive producer Spike Lee support Cundieff in his horror endevor.

You can’t go wrong with a tag line like ‘Chill or be Chilled’.
