Scream-A-Day No.15 – PERFECT BLUE (1997)

This is more of a thriller than actual horror.  It doesn’t have a monster, but a monstrous plot.  If PSYCHO is considered fair game for an October celebration of horror, then this film fits right up there with it.  Plus, it’s a special choice for this Scream-A-Day because it’s actually an anime – PERFECT BLUE.

Starring Junko Iwao as Mima, with Rica Matsumoto and Shinpachi Tsuji, this dark anime centers on Mima, a pop-star turned budding actress who thinks she’s being stalked.  We think we know who’s doing the stalking, but then the mystery gets deeper.  Satoshi Kon directed and Sadayuki Murai wrote the screenplay adapted from the novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi.

Anime lovers should be familiar with this film, but Hitchcock fans should check it out too.

Oh, and if this film reminds you of a certain film that came out a few years ago by Darren Aronofsky about a black water foul…that was seeing things.  Well, it should.

Tomorrow we travel from Japan to England, and from Thrillers to Chillers in Scream-A-Day No.16.  Stop back soon.
