Scream-A-Day No.10 – VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN

Eddie Murphy with Fangs and an accent does not a BLACKULA make, but this horror-comedy did show us that vampires can pop up anywhere, even in Brooklyn.  Today’s Scream-A-Day is VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN.

Eddie Murphy plays the debonair Maximillion, a vampire trying to find his destined love.  Angela Bassett as Rita is the woman he’s after.  But her partner is leery of this Maximillion who only seems to come out at night.  It’s a classic Dracula story with some color and a hair perm.

This might not have been a shining moment in Eddie Murphy or Wes Craven’s careers, but it’s a movie that many of you younger geeks remember.  Maybe it will even put a smile on your face.  Kudos to Murphy for bringing vampires back into the lives of black people.  I wouldn’t be Geek Soul Brother if I couldn’t give you guys at least some black horror movies every now and then.  I did like Bassett and Allen Payne’s roles, and Kadeem Hardison made a pretty good ghoul.  Wes Craven was probably one of the only horror directors that could mesh the comedy and horror together in a way you would expect from Murphy.

And don’t think this is the only monster of color that I’ll feature for these 31 Scream-A-Days.  Stay tuned for some classic choices in the days to come.
