Flashback Friday: SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS

There is NO better movie that mixes the Christmas season with Science Fiction than the incredible (or incredibly bad) 1964 film - SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS.

Something is wrong with the kids on Mars.  They are sad and listless, but their Martian parents don’t know what’s making them act like that.  All they know is that their Martian kids keep looking at all those Earth TV shows.  After speaking to an old wise Martian (who explodes), KIMAR, a father and leader of the Martians gets an idea – “We will kidnap Santa Claus from earth, and he can make the Martian children toys.”

Kimar ends up liking the Jolly Fat Man, but his underling – Bromar, doesn’t want things to change at all. Bromar likes the kids quiet and emotionless (the quiet part I can dig).   Things work out, as Space Saint Nick convinces the Martians that there are ‘other’ options than holding him on Mars.

I can’t tell you how horrible this movie is.  Even as a kid, I just shook my head.  But it’s a laugh to watch as an adult.  I’m sure it was fun for the little ones in the Sixties, and for that matter, it may be fun for them to watch today.  You can head over to hulu.com because they have the whole movie HERE.
