Raising Dion – Parenting The Super-powered!

We’ve seen thousands of superheroes and villains in comics and their films.  We’ve even seen super kids off and on. But how many times have we seen someone parenting a kid with superpowers?  Sure there was Reed and Sue of the Fantastic Four with their kids. Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops tried to parent his alternate timeline daughter Rachel.  But have we seen a regular human mother raising her super-powered son?  Maybe you walking comic encyclepedias know of some, but none come to mind for me.  And I’m pretty sure if there were an example they wouldn’t be African American.  But the comic RAISING DION now fills that gap in comic culture.

PREMISE: Nicole, raises her 7 year old son, Dion, who has superpowers. Life was hard enough keeping up with the bills, let alone trying to keep track of her son’s invisibility, plasma powers, and telekinesis. In order to study his progress, Nicole films her son 24/7 with the help of her friend, Pat, who is an aspiring filmmaker. But when Nicole starts to notice mysterious men tailing her, and with Dion’s developing abilities constantly changing and becoming more powerful and possibly evil, she must find the courage deep within herself that she can raise Dion on her own.

The comic was written by Dennis Liu and illustrated by Jason Piperberg.  If you want a copy you can pick it up Here.  Dennis is a director whose work covers music videos, commercials and of course short film.  You can check out his site at www.dennis-liu.com  Here is the trailer for the comic for you fellow nerds that haven’t seen it.
