Captain Marcus Chaplin (Played by Andre Braugher) is a man that has love for his country, his ship and his crew. But when he questions the suspicious order to launch four nuclear missiles towards the middle east, the Captain finds his submarine the deadly target of his own government. That’s when he has to take matters into his own hands in ABC’s LAST RESORT.
Before I get into a review of the pilot episode, an exclusive courtesy of Yahoo TV, I just want to say that this show is starting out right. Action, tension, pacing and character introduction were all there. Braugher is perfect as the seasoned Captain of a nuclear submarine. With him are a few recognizable faces and some new ones to ABC.
Here is the full episode. Check it out, or read my thought about it below if you don’t mind a little spoiling.
Starting out, the story quickly gives us a view of life on the U.S.S Colorado. Friends and frienemies get their 20 second intros, but that’s all we need to see for the ‘who is who’ purpose of the pilot. Once we get a sense of the environment, it doesn’t take long for the story to throw us into the action. The tension around the possibility of launching nuclear missles can’t be ignored. But watching things quickly unravel, you get a good sense of deep political intrigue. I though the tone of the episode would change once they found haven on the tropical island, but the writers made sure the audience knew that this was the foundation for even more tension as the crew of the Colorado butt heads with the locals of the islands.
Some aspects were a little far fetched, but I’l give them creative license on that. The drama escellated to a climatic moment when Captain Chaplin showed just what happens when you try to attack his ship and crew.
So yeah, I’m giving LAST RESORT two afro-antenna up. So far it has all the elements of a show that might gain an audience.
LAST RESORT officially premieres Sept. 27th at 8pm eastern on ABC, followed by GREY’S ANATOMY at 9 and the season premiere of SCANDAL at 10pm.
