‘Free Me’ is the first album from London-based, Burundian-born royal family descendant JP Bimeni who teams up with the talented duo Eduardo Martínez and songwriter Marc Ibarz to deliver a great throwback funky soul album that gives Bimeni a platform to speak about the trials and tribulations of his past. ‘Honesty Is A Luxury’ has a foreboding air, ‘Same Man’ has an uplifting feel thanks to the razor-sharp horns, the crushing ballad ‘Pain Is The Name’ has a Daptone feel while the emphatic ‘Better Place’ is a superb dancefloor number. The swaying ballad ‘Miss You’ and the Charles Bradley like ‘Free Me’ are also strong on a consistently good album. Tuxone are really establishing themselves: fans of the superb Shirley Davis album will love this too.
