Recorded on August 27th 1962, this session shows Dexter Gordon in fine flowing form. The pace is relentless and the band swings with Billy Higgins driving the whole show forward. ‘Cheese Cake’ and ‘Second Balcony’ illustrate the point and are typical Blue Note grooves. Higgins’ work on the upbeat take of Cole Porter’s ‘Love For Sale’ is invigorating. Pianist Sonny Clark’s touch is delicate yet incisive. It is Dexter Gordon’s expressive and lyrical sound that grabs the attention. This lyricism is equal on the soulful ‘Where Are You’. Simply put Gordon is in commanding form on what is regarded as his finest Blue Note session if not the best album he recorded.
