Will Sessions and fellow Detroit legend Amp Fiddler team up with vocal trio Dames Brown to deliver one of the tightest new soulful boogie sets for a long time. Imagine an indie soul artist from the Motor City circa 1981 borrowing the voices of the Eighties Ladies and dropping an album of tough, funky, angular grooves with a rock solid band: pretty much sums up this stunning 8-track offering. The infectious opener ‘What It Is’ climbs aboard the boogie train and just keeps on building – instant dancefloor classic – the growling bass and warm groove of ‘Lost Without You’ complement Amp’s gruff delivery while the more laid back ‘Belle Isle Drive’ has a Sly Stone feel in the lazy, carefree vocals. ‘Rendezvous’ and ‘Reminiscin’ both aim straight for the feet with purpose, ‘Seven Mile’ brings things back down again with an expansive, spacey vibe while the smooth flow of ‘Who Am I’ is another absolute gem with those Dames nailing it. This faultless set closes out with the more uptempo, angular ‘Reconcile’. Totally brilliant and essential for boogie/Roy Ayres fans in particular.
