Groovin

LA based British born acoustic guitarist returns to a familiar theme for him, covers of classic 60s, 70s, and 80s Soul and Pop tunes. There are some gems such as Stevie’s ‘Do I Do’ and ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’. A strong version of ‘Groovin’ is the delightful opening tune and there are nice versions of ‘How Long’, ‘When will I See You Again’ and ‘Dock Of The Bay’. Amongst several guests, Rick Braun and Vincent Ingala are especially impressive.

‘G’ sees Gerald Albright in fine form. Michael McDonald adds his distinctive voice to a cover of Bill Withers ‘Lovely Day’. Check too the mellow ‘I Miss You’. There are plenty of smooth grooves like ‘Boom Boom’ and the jazzy ‘Taking Control’. Try too the slower ‘Frankie B’ and the grittier ‘Funkism’. The tempo ups for the Jazz Funk of ‘We Came To Play’. A strong Gerald Albright set.

One Way Back

10 tracks many featuring collaborations with fellow guitarists (Peter White, Marc Antoine, Chris Standring and Chuck Loeb) that are the core to ‘One Way Back’. The eight instrumentals focus on relaxed Smooth Jazz including a laid-back cover of the Crusaders’ ‘Put It Where You Want It’. Standring joins Brown on the jaunty ‘Piccadilly Circus’, whereas the gentle ‘Take Flight’ stars White. ‘Rear View Mirror’ is a radio friendly and melodic smooth groove with Chuck Loeb. Good Smooth Jazz.

Veteran Smooth Jazz acoustic guitarist delivers yet another fine album with ‘Laguna Beach’. At times, his playing is exquisite drawing on his flamenco roots. Tunes like the Latin flavoured ‘Romantico’ and ‘New Morning’ are just gorgeous. ‘Deixa’ is a lovely Bossa tinged shuffler ‘Minority’ is a gritty mid-tempo groove. Guests include Phillipe Saisse, Rick Braun and Paul Brown. Quality.

Smooth Jazz keyboard wizard Oli Silk delivers a fine album in ‘Where I Lift Off’; it is a mix of smooth melodies, fine grooves and Fusion tinged numbers. On the melodic side check ‘Ooh Baby’ and the lilting ‘Take Some Time Out’ that features Peter White. There are 2 vocal tunes, a strong cover of Joe Sample’s ‘Burning Up The Carnival’ and the riff laden ‘Music Without Sound’, both feature the voice of Katie Leonie. The upbeat ‘Suits You Sir’, the Latin flavoured ‘Su Casa Mi Casa’, the grooving ‘Catch My Breath’ and the slower ‘Cluster Funk’ illustrate the more Fusion orientated style of Smooth Jazz. Guests include Steve Cole, Rick Braun, Althea Rene and Nick Colionne as well as White. Top notch Smooth Jazz.

Sugar And Spice

Greg Manning is a pianist with a delicate touch that is suited to the Smooth Jazz format. ‘Sugar And Spice’ lives up to its title as the CD is a Smooth Jazz delight, though its appeal will be primarily with lovers of the genre. Tunes like the dreamy ‘I Need To Know’ and ‘Caribbean Breeze’ with its summery feel typify the album’s strengths. But there is much to enjoy including smooth melodies like ‘When You Love Someone’ and the joyful vibe of ‘Esperanza’. Alongside Manning, saxophonist Donald Hayes stands out guesting on the smooth opener ‘Round N Round’ and the upbeat and subtle funk of ‘Happy’. Good set.

Still Euge

‘Still Euge’ is the tenth solo album by saxophonist Euge Groove. It is strong Smooth Jazz, enhanced by a full band including an outstanding contribution by bassist Cornelius ‘Corny’ Mims. His playing adds warmth, depth and a little funkiness. The outstanding cut is the warm SJ/Soul gem ‘Much Love’ that features Rahsaan Patterson on vocals. Oleta Adams adds a typically fulsome vocal to ‘Flower’. There are a couple of dreamy numbers the opener ‘Twelfth Night’ and the gorgeous ‘Another Perfect Moment’ featuring Peter White. ‘Let’s Chill’ is another strong number with a mid-tempo groove. In truth, the album is amongst his finest.

Smooth Jazz guitarist delivers his second album. ‘Soul Stories’ is full of good time flavours such as ‘Groove-O-Matic’ and the tribute to Wes Montgomery ‘Wes Side Story’. Najee adds a nice flute solo to ‘Encantadora’ which compliments Blake’s switch to acoustic guitar. ‘You’re My Miracle’, the Latin tinged ‘Sol Amor’ and the cover of Hall and Oates’ ‘Sara Smile’ are also very nice smooth grooves.

Flutist, vocalist, and songwriter, Ragan Whiteside is taking the Contemporary Jazz world by storm. With her unique style and soulful vibe, this triple threat is bringing the flute back into mainstream focus. Her music crosses the boundaries of Smooth and Contemporary Jazz and New Soul. Her third album ‘Quantum Drive’ is possibly her most accomplished to date, and is a crowd funded project. She is joined by Patrice Rushen, Bob Baldwin , Frank McComb and Althea Rene on this set. Patrice Rushen accompanies Ragan on a nice vocal version of her own ‘Remind me’. Frank McComb adds his keyboard genius to ‘Smokey Room’. ‘Gentle Touch’ is a nice laid back vocal track, and ‘Soul Biscuit’ has that 60’s Soul/Jazz feel to it. Nice album

Paul is joined by many guests on this refreshing laid back album, Trumpetter Darren Rahn on ‘Truth Be Told’, Najee on ‘Casablanca’, Richard Elliot on ‘Home Sweet Home’, Dave Koz on ‘Avalon nights’, Larry Carlton on the Crusader-esq ‘Purple Shoes’, Wendy Moten on thr only vocal cut ‘Love N Trust’ and Euge Groove on the slightly funkier ‘Stay Sly’. Paul’s Guitar is the main focus on ‘Take it from me’, ‘Til the Morning comes’ and ‘Sunrise on Sunset’. Nice album
