When Lee Morgan recorded ‘Cornbread’ in 1965, he was still on a crest of a popular wave following on from the wide appeal of ‘The Sidewinder’. ‘Cornbread’ has that finger popping groove that made ‘The Sidewinder’ such a classic; it has that swinging swagger to it. ‘Our Man Higgins’ is a tribute to drummer Billy Higgins, who alongside bassist Larry Ridley hols down the rhythm section. ‘Ceora’ and the stepping ‘Most Like Lee’ complete the album’s up-tempo tracks and all are composed by Lee Morgan himself. Herbie Hancock is in the piano chair and his distinctive and inventive playing is a feature of the album. The horn frontline sees tenor man Hank Mobley and alto sax legend Jackie McLean share the spotlight with Mr Morgan.
