‘Moanin’ is often cited as if not the finest then one of the finest Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers albums. ‘Moanin’ was a triumphant return to Blue Note after a couple years’ hiatus from the label. The title song composed by young pianist Bobby Timmons has one of the most memorable refrains in Jazz. The young group that includes saxophonist Benny Golson, bassist Jymie Merritt and trumpet prodigy Lee Morgan swing throughout, propelled by Blakey’s intense yet flamboyant drumming. ‘Are You Real’ is a case in point and flows gracefully. ‘Along Came Betty’ is a slower more deliberate blues, whilst ‘The Drum Thunder Suite’s title speaks for itself as Art Blakey plays as only he can. ‘Blues March’ finished the album on marching band inspired sound and is the fourth Benny Golson composition. Recorded in 1958, the album remains one of Blue Note’s iconic albums.
