Not regarded as one of Blue Note’s outstanding classic albums, Freddie Hubbard’s ‘Blue Spirits’ remains one of this writer’s most played. ‘Blue Spirits’ comprises two sessions recorded on 19th and 26th February 1963. Two tracks are performed by an octet and three by a septet. It is the latter session that produced the fantastic ‘Blue Spirits’ – a classic Blue Note waltz that Freddie attacks with characteristic vigour before passing solo duties onto the soulful tenor sax of Hank Mobley. Freddie’s refrain is truly wonderful towards the conclusion of this 12 minute opus. The presence of Kiane Zawadi’s euphonium gives the set a unique feel. ‘Cunga Black’, the Soul Jazz of ‘Soul Surge’ and the driving ‘Outer Forces’ make this the next best Freddie Hubbard Blue Note recording after the brilliant ‘Ready For Freddie’.
