This 1974 album really put Chaka Khan on the map. Rufus had their own distinctive funky soul sound, Chaka’s incredible vocals backed by Tony Maiden and Bobby Watson, this was their classic album. ‘Once You get Started’ a storming uptempo number kicks it of, the riff laden mid tempo ‘Somebody’s Watching You’, ‘Please Pardon me’ a great melodic string laden horn backed mid tempo and ‘Stop on By’ thier hit cover of Womack’s song a mid tempo classic are the standout tracks. ‘Pack’d My Bags’ a fairly slow melodic mid tempo track that builds was covered on Chaka’s recent album, ‘Your Smile’ a melancholy ballad, ‘Rufusized’ a clavinet led semi instrumental and ‘I’m A Woman (I’m a Backbone)’ funky soul showing Chaka’s gritty vocals are also good tracks that complete this Incredible album from a great band at the top of their game.
