Cannonball Adderley’s ‘Something Else’ is sometimes considered as a Miles Davis session under another name, which given Adderley’s contribution and status is somewhat disrespectful. Two standards kick the set off in swinging form, firstly the delicate take on Nat King Cole’s hit ‘Autumn Leaves’ and a romping version of Cole Porter’s standard ‘Love For Sale’. Listening to Miles’ and Cannonball’s solos, this is poetry in motion. Art Blakey is subdued by his standards, but that only accentuates the soloist’s lyricism. ‘Somethin Else’ is a finger popping Davis composition with Miles’ solo reminiscent of ‘Kind Of Blue’ that followed a year later. ‘Dancing In The Dark’ is a barnstorming and joyful groove with the entire band including Hank Jones on piano and bassist Sam Jones right on point
