Drummer Roy Haynes recorded ‘Hip Ensemble’ for the Mainstream label in 1971. The album will appeal to those that enjoy Spiritual Jazz with an edge. It is a strong set throughout and Haynes drumming drives tracks like Stanley Cowell’s ‘Equipose’ and the blistering ‘You Name It/ Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing’. Mention must go to Teru Nakamura’s bass work which is intense.

I heard Roy Haynes as a sideman on many albums but this is the first album I have in which he leads. It was an excellent experience. The album is far more bluesy and experimental than I had anticipated without going completely free form. The result is around 35 minutes of high quality listening.
