From 1968 ‘This Is My Country’ was The Impressions’ first release on Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom label. The socio-political ‘They Don’t Know’ kicks things off with Curtis’ conscious lyrics backed with a tight, horn heavy backing and those great harmonies from the group. ‘Stay Close To Me’ is a great uptempo dancer with northern appeal, the mellow ‘I’m Loving Nothing’ is a wonderful bit of street corner soul, the dancer ‘You Want Somebody’ is set in ¾ time giving it a swaying flowing feel, ‘My Woman’s Love’ is a fantastic breezy brass lead ballad with stunning harmonies, whilst ‘This Is My Country’ has a celebratory feel atop those proud, socially aware lyrics. Good album.
