Issued in 1973 and 1974 respectively ‘David Ruffin’ and ‘Me and Rock and Roll Are Here To Stay’ came after Motown refused to issue his 1971 set ‘David’. Even though Ruffin had been ‘relegated’ from access to Motown’s A-List material, this set still includes some superb moments. ‘The Roving Kind’, the funky ‘Blood Donors Needed’, his covers of ‘I Miss you’ and ‘If Loving You Is Wrong’ and the heartfelt ‘Common Man’ are strong. ‘Me and Rock N’ Roll..’ further testifies to the musical progression journeyed since Ruffin’s solo debut with the strung out ‘Smiling Faces Sometimes’, the folk soul feel of ‘No Matter Where’ and the spacey, experimental ‘I Saw You when I Met Her’ being highlights.
