Soul Jazz Unit are an Italian Jazz trio featuring Piero Masciarelli on Guitar who plays in a Grant Green style, Emilian Pari on Organ and Marcello Surace on Drums. They are joined by Eric Daniel on Flute on a cover of Billy Cobham’ s ‘Red Baron’and Franco Marinacci on Sax on two tracks the funky ‘Need Your Funk’ and jazzier ‘Afro’. ‘Old School Recipes’ contains six original instumental Funky Jazz tracks plus a vocal cover of Stevie’s ‘Love Having you around’ and a bluesy version of Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’. ‘Pentatonic’ and ‘Shark Tales’ are strong original tracks sounding a little like Soulive or Lettuce. Good album, the best in a while from the Irma label.
