Gilles Peterson has produced an amazing album of Brazilian groove oriented music with the help of Kassin and Sam Shepherd. It features many well known and contemporary Brazilian musicians, including Marcus Valle, Seu Jorge, Nana Vasconcelos and Elza Soares. As you might expect the rhythms are strong throughout and the music has incredible grace and beauty. Airto’s ‘Xibaba’ is an incredibly percussive track topped with lovely floating vocals from Emanuelle Araujo, Valarie Etienne and Bembe Segue amongst others. ‘Sambaio’ is another strong groove. Marcus Valle and Leon Ware wrote the lovely ‘Estrelar’ and there are good and unusual versions of ‘Southern Freeeze’ and ‘The Mystery of Man’. This album could do for Brazilian music what Nu Yorican Soul did for Latin on the same Talkin Loud label fifteen years ago. Very strong album.
