Veteran Saxophonist Archie Shepp re-recorded his classic 1972 ‘Attica Blues’ album live in concert in 2013 to create this album. He is aided by vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant , Reggie Washington, Ambrose Akinmusire, Stephane Belmondo and many others. This is powerful music written to comment on the prison uprising and brutal authoritian response in 1971. ‘Attica Blues’ is a funky jazz groove, ‘Mama Too Tight’ has a funky big band sound, ‘Blues for Brother G Jackson’ and ‘Cry of my people’ have an amazing deep feeling and crescendo, whilst ‘Quiet Dawn’ is spiritual and tranquil.
