Veteran Soul singer Lee Fields made a comeback five years ago backed by the fabulous band The Expressions. He is fine voice on Emma Jean, which may be the album to provide him with the kind of success which has eluding him through his 40+ year career. ‘Just Can’t Win’ is a lovely upper mid tempo horn backed retro soul track, with a great hookline. ‘Standing by your side’ is another good upper tempo track. ‘Still Get’s Me Down’ is a James Brown 60’s style soul ballad. ‘Don’t Leave me This way’ , ‘Paralyzed’ and ‘Magnolia’ are also good ballads. The Expressions get the chance to shine on the uptempo instrumental ‘All I Need’. Very strong album, if you like Charles Bradley or classic late 60’s Soul, this is for you.
