Released in 1967, ‘I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You’ is Aretha’s 10th studio album and her first for Atlantic. Rick Hall produced the album at the legendary FAME studios im Memphis and the album featured and array of talent including Carolyn Franklin, Erma Franklin and Cissy Houston on background vocals as well as Spooner Oldham on keys and piano. The album kicks off with the global smash ‘Respect’ and the vibe of the album is generally a down home, southern bluesoul with a lazy feel, typified by gems such as ‘Baby, Baby, Baby’, the ebbing title track, the church feel of ‘Drown In My Own Tears’ and the atmospheric cover of Otis’ ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’. The funkier ‘Save Me’ is the sister to ‘Respect’ while ‘Do Right Woman – Do Right man’ is Aretha at her best. Essential, classic soul.
