Charenee Wade earns the distinction of being the only musician to ever place twice in the Thelonious Monk International voice competition. She has the sassiness in her voice of Dee Dee Bridgewater or Sarah Vaughan. This album of Jazz interpretations of the songs of Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson is a revelation, really shedding a different light on these great and meaningful compositions. ‘Home is Where the Hatred Is’, ‘I Think I’ll call it Morning’, ‘Offering’ , ‘Song of the Wind’, ‘Toast to the People’, ‘Peace go with you brother’ and ‘The Vulture’ are amongst the 10 songs included. The band is amazing and includes Lonnie Plaxico on bass, Brandon Mc Cune piano, Dave Stryker guitar, Lakecia Benjamin Sax and Stefon Harris on vibes, they form a powerful backdrop to Charenee’s amazing voice. This is a really good album and a fitting tribute to a true genius of our music.
