Manchester based Trumpeter and band leader Matthew Halsall has established himself as one of the leading lights of British Jazz in recent years. ‘Into Forever’ puts the spotlight on Halsall as a composer, arranger and producer.Soul Poet Josephine Oniyama adds another dimension to his music on the four tracks she appears on. ‘Only A Woman’ has a late 60’s Rotary Connection influence, ‘As I Walk’ reminds me of Leon Thomas ‘China Doll’, whilst the Soul-Jazz ‘Badder Weather’ is simply beautiful and features some great musicianship from Harpist Rachel Gladwin and Bassist Gavin Barras. Flautist Lisa Mallett stars on the lovely modal and spiritual jazz instrumentals ‘The Land Of’ and ‘Longshan Temple’ which have an eastern feel and have an Alice Coltrane or Dorothy Ashby influence. Halsall takes lead on ‘Daan Park’ with a haunting Trumpet Solo. This superb album has a very relaxing and Spiritual feel, join him for a journey into forever.
