Initially formed as a Jazz label in 1964 Bob Shad’s Mainstream imprint would branch out and encompass divergent styles including soul after its 1970 relaunch. The IX Chains and Brown Dog subsidiaries would follow later until the operation folded in ‘76. Amongst others, big spins on the Northern and modern scenes for the likes of Randolph Brown’s ‘It Ain’t Like It Used To’, Jackey Beavers’ ‘We’re Not Too Young’, Alice Clark’s inimitable ‘Don’t You Care and The Fantastic Puzzles’ ‘Come Back’. Ain’t Nobody Gonna Make Me (Turn My Back On My Baby) by Linda Perry is heard here for the first time – so good – while The Steptones’ ‘Let The People Talk’ and The Dramatics ‘No Rebate On Love’ are soulful disco edged winners. Almetta Lattimore’s ‘These Memories’ is also a star of the show – the epitome of crossover! Killer comp!
