Cuban songstress/ producer/ writer Dayme Arocena combines with Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label to release one of THE albums of the year. Five covers including a take on Horace silver’s ‘Gods of Yoruba’ produce an intoxicating mix of Jazz, Latin with African influences. Eddie Gale’s ‘African Sunshine’ features haunting trumpet and deep running bass. On the Latin front check ‘EL 456’ and ‘Asking Eyes’; there is even a Boogie style tune in Peven Everett’s ‘Stuck’. The only original ‘Muy Cerquita De Ti’ ends this brilliant album with Afro Cuban twist. Essential.
