Brazilian superstar singer and keyboardist Ed Motta shows how versatile he is on this superb album ‘Perpetual gateways’ which is split between 5 Soul and 5 Jazz tracks and features a stella cast of musicians. The Soul cuts show a heavy Steely Dan/Donald Fagan influence. ‘Captain Refusal’ is upbeat and ‘Hypochondriac’s Fun’ a juanty upper mid tempo both typically Steely tracks. ‘Good Intensions is a lovely mid tempo song and ‘Heritage Deja Vu’ a melodic uptempo cut both featuring great keyboards from Patrice Rushen. ‘The Owner’ has a modal jazz groove and features a great Trumpet solo from Curtis Taylor. ‘A Town in flames is a powerhouse straight ahead jazz groove and features a great Flute solo from Hubert Laws. ‘I remember Julie’ and the ‘Take Five’ style groove ‘Overblown Overweight’ really cook and have great horn solos from Taylor and sax player Rickey Woodard. This is easily Motta’s best album to date and will be one of THE albums of 2016.
