Trumpeter Charles Sullivan recorded one of the first albums on the Inner City label in 1976 with the critically acclaimed ‘Genesis’. He is supported by a stellar line up including Sonny Fortune, Stanley Cowell, Billy Hart, Alphonse Mouzon and Onaje Allen Gumbs amongst others. The style is similar to that of the Strata East label with a mixture of heavy fusion and spiritual jazz. ‘Evening Song’ gets us on the way with a heavy groove, ‘Field Holler’ is heavier fusion whilst the title track is a 17 minute Spiritual Jazz workout. Dee Dee Bridgewater provides the vocals on the lovely ballad ‘Now I’ll sleep’.
