Recorded in France as a tribute to Art Blakey who is one of the major influences on the veteran Afrobeat drummer, ‘The Source’ is the first full album that Tony Allen has released at Blue Note. ‘On Fire’ is an aptly titled jazzy piece, whilst ‘Wolf Eats Wolf’ owes more to Afrobeat. ‘Moody Boys’ is a fine slice of Jazz, whereas ‘Push And Pull’ displays a wealth of influences from various black music styles. ‘Cruising’ is driven by a superb bass line underpinning a smoky Latin tinged groove. The lazy easy going ‘Life Is Beautiful’ concludes an album that is strong from start to finish. The horns and their arrangements are magnificent. One of the albums of the year.
