‘In The Mood’ sees Maurice Brown blending soul, jazz hip hop and world influences and on the title track the vibe is very much laid back jazz groove with spoken word/rap that works well. ‘On My Way Home’ is a funky affair – a tight groove with Brown’s warm trumpet overlapping to an ever-building crescendo – while Talib Kwele raps on the spacey, expansive ‘Stand Up’. ‘Moroccan Dancehall’ is a free, fast and funky excursion into global influences, ‘Destination Hope’ fuses the soulful vocals and spoken word of Chris Turner and J. Ivy with spacy washes flowing in and out while ‘Capricorn Rising’ is a sumptuous warm jazz fusion effort. Really good album.
