Every few years a new female Jazz singer emerges and blows us away with her sassiness. 2017 welcomes Jazzmeia Horn debut album ‘A Social Call’ , a fine selection of standards and classic tracks with a social message, backed by a great band. ‘Up above my head’ and ‘Social Call’ really swing, the 10 min + ‘medley’ contains a unique cover of ‘Afro Blue’ joined with Wade in the water’ by her own dramatic ‘Eye see You’. She really let’s rip on a jazzed up version of Norman Whitfield’s ‘I’m going down’. The killer cut though is Jazzmeia’s version of ‘People make the world go round’. A thought provoking spoken word intro segues into a spiritual jazz workout from the brass and rhythm sections before she delivers a scintillating vocal over a driving rhythm. Jazzmeia cites Rachell Ferrell as her mentor and there are certain similarities in her approach. This will undoubtedly be amongst the Jazz albums of the year. SENSATIONAL !
