Following on from his 2012 ‘Prologue’ album Aaron Abernathy returns with ‘Monologue’, a release that hosts a number of top class guests including Deborah Bond, Phonte, Nat Turner and Zo! Vocally Abernathy is clearly inspired by Prince and Sugarfoot while the music twists from funk dancers to mellow soul numbers and points inbetween. ‘I See You’ has a real Prince feel – spacey synths dominate the mid tempo head nodder, ‘Pretty Kind’ has a Sugarfoot tempo and groove while ‘Play It Cool’ is a good beat laden dancer. Zo! Contributes on the pulsing keyboard washes of the cosmic sounding ‘When Reality Sets In’ while the title track ‘Monologue’ is another groove and beat heavy soulful number with a twist. Good set.
