74 year old Memphis Soul legend Don Bryant returns with a new album – ‘Don’t Give Up On Love’ – that features the ever busy Hi Rhythm Section (check the recent Robert Cray CD). The whole album has a timeless southern soul feel with impeccable playing from the band and even at this stage in his career his voice is strong and powerful. The dark ‘Nickel And A Nail’ takes O.V Wright’s original and wrenches out a bit more grit, the gospel blues of ‘How Do I Get There’ is a superb, soaring mid tempo while ‘One Ain’t Enough’ is a familiar southern soul story told with a swagger and a Memphis kick. ‘Can’t Hide The Hurt’ is an infectious groover while ‘Don’t Give Up On Love’ is a sublime, tender ballad. Fantastic return and such a fitting ode to his wife Ann Peebles who inspired the album.
