Dee Dee Bridgewater’s voice is amazing on this tribute to her birthplace Memphis. The album is recorded at the Royal Studios co-produced by Willie’s son Lawrence ‘Boo’ Mitchell and features some top level musicians including Kirk Whallum on Saxes, John Stoddart on keys, Charles Hodge on Organ, Gary Goin on Guitar. ‘Yes I’m Ready’ is a superb cover of the Barbara Mason classic. ‘Giving Up’ is also a great version of the Van McCoy song previously immortalised by Donny Hathaway. ‘I Can’t Get next To You’ , ‘Going Down Slowly’, ‘Why Am I treated So bad’, ‘The Thrill Is Gone’ , ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ are Memphis classics given great interpretations on this superbly executed album.
