From 1973, ‘Elements’ is amongst Joe Henderson’s finest albums. Four tracks representing each of the Greek elements, the set kicks off with the intensity of ‘Fire’ on which Charlie Haden’s deep running bass is fundamental. ‘Water’ has a North African/ Middle Eastern vibe, whilst ‘Earth’ has a quasi Native American theme. Some of the music is slightly left-field but reflects the Spiritual Jazz of its time. Guests include Alice Coltrane and violinist Michael White.
