Classic 1975 album from a trio that had been students of Donald Byrd, ‘Vibes Of Truth’ is a gem that continues to sound fresh. The modern soul floater ‘I Need You Girl’ is a floorfiller, the brooding funky soul of ‘Backed Up Against A Wall’ is a slow burner that grows and builds while the jazzy title track bears the hallmarks of Byrd’s teaching. ‘Self Dealin’ is a great soul fusion track that has a soundtrack feel in places, the summery crossover ‘If Only I Could Prove to You’ is a stunning mid tempo that has a Huston vibe while the funky jazz instrumental ‘Shortin’ Bread’ shows the band at their full power. Brilliant, timeless album. Essential.
