Stanley Turrentine’s early CTI albums are amongst the label’s best and ‘Cherry’ (alongside ‘Sugar) is the best of the best. It features several gems including Lee Morgan’s ‘Speedball’, Weldon Irvine’s ‘Sister Sanctified’ and Milt Jackson’s ‘The Revs’. Jackson’s guests on vibes and compliments Turrentine’s bluesy tenor. The title track, ‘Don’t Mess With Mr T’ is a fine cover of the Marvin Gaye’s song from the soundtrack ‘Trouble Man’. ‘Two For T’ is a swinging Jazz number with Stanley and Bob James in top form. ‘Sugar Man’ is a good set with the smoking ‘The Stretch’ and ‘Vera Cruz’ standing out.
