Continuing with our look at how Mel Brooks mixed the horror, thriller and Scifi genres with comedy, I take you to the world of thrillers; Hitchcock thrillers to be exact. Brooks took a look at movies like Psycho, Spellbound, Vertigo and other Hitchcock classics, and turned them on their heads in his zanny comedy-thriller HIGH ANXIETY.
The 1977 movie follows Dr. Richard H. Thorndyke (Mel Brooks), who is taking a head position at a mental institution. He’s framed for murder, and has to solve it himself to clear his name, all the while suffering from a condition called High Anxiety. This classic also stars Mel Brooks’ faithful collection of comedic actors - Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, Ron Carey and Howard Morris as Professor Lilloman (Little Old Man). If you love Alfred Hichcock films, and you haven’t seen HIGH ANXIETY, then you are missing out on some classic parodies.

Out of the three Brooks movies I’m featuring, I haven’t seen this one for the longest. I think it’s time to get reacquainted with it.
