That’s right, Geek Soul Brother loves BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. It was a thought provoking Science Fiction TV series that ran from 2003 to 2009 (including the mini-series). The story was about the Galactica, a space faring battleship that protected the last remnants of humanity, as they escaped annihilation at the hands of the artificially intelligent robots called Cylons.
So magnificent at portraying REAL fundamental struggles of humanity in a fictional setting, BSG was featured at the United Nations in a conference to discuss the different (and dark) realities played out during the series. Things like Torture, child trafficking, political dictatorship and religious freedoms were some of the topics covered.
The UN’s Creative Community Outreach Initiative was set up to connect with international Film and TV industries that promoted values shared by the UN. They and the SYFY channel put together this panel, which was recorded soon after the show ended. This video is rather long (2 hrs), so watch it at your leisure. I just wanted to hip you geek brothers and sisters onto it, since it was the first time I’d ever seen something like this happen. If you’ve seen the series, then you can understand why the UN did this. And if you haven’t seen the series, then this might prompt you to check it out.
Best line in the video… “When a Bug Hates You, That’s Racism!” – Edward James Olmos
