Flashback Friday: THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN

A few months ago I expressed on the blog how much I was overjoyed that they finally, and I mean FINALLY released THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN on DVD.  I’d been waiting for the series to make it to disc for as long as they’ve been putting TV series on discs.

To see Steve Austin once again brought me back to a childhood filled imagination that millions of other ‘older’ geeks could relate to.  Lee Majors played the bionic man who, while testing an experimental aircraft, crashed into the testing field.  He lost both legs, an arm and his left eye.  But instead of being handicapped, Steve’s friend and scientist Dr. Rudy Wells, and other government officials decided they could rebuild him.  They could make him better than he was; better, stronger, faster.  Austin, with the direction of Oscar Goldman, became a sort of secret bionic agent of a group call OSI (Office of Scientific Intelligence).

I don’t care what people think of this awesome Scifi action TV series now, it had a quality to it that was unique for back in the day.  And really, it still has that quality all its own.  The pilot Movie and subsequent first season were trying to find that right formula, but the show got better as it went along.  One of the best parts were those special effect sounds that Austin made when he was doing something ‘bionic’, like throwing a heavy object hundreds of feet, or using his telescopic bionic eye.  And the theme music hit the right notes with either a jazzy flavor, or a dramatic tone for a fight scene.

There has been talk (maybe gossip) over Brian Singer doing a Movie remake of the series.  I don’t think they would be able to do the 70′s hit show justice, but I wouldn’t be 100% opposed.  But truthfully, the old series is all Geek Soul Brother needs to get his bionic fix.

For those of you that don’t know, there was also a spin-off series called THE BIONIC WOMAN.  But by that time the eighties was starting to roll around and the more action oriented shows started coming out.  That’s probably why Lee Majors starred in THE FALL GUY after THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN had been cancelled.  Big props to Steve Austin for making the White brothers look cool back in the day.

If you’re a fan, you can pick this 1st season up at Amazon.com.

Second Season Comes out Oct. 2nd.
