Flashback Friday: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN TV SERIES (1977)

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN came out this week in theaters.  I thought it was is was a good reboot, even though no body thought we needed a reboot so soon after the previous films.  You can read my Review of the 2012 film HERE.

The movie is only one of many forms Spider-Man has taken in our mass media.  Comics, Cartoons, Games, Films, Toys.  But there has been only one LIVE ACTION TV Show featuring the famous wall-crawler.  Today’s Flashback Friday is THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN TV SERIES.

Nicholas Hammond starred as the young science student Peter Parker, who gets bitten by a radioactive Spider and gets super-human powers.

The pilot aired September of 1977, and the series started in the month of April of 78′.  It also starred Robert F. Simon as J. Jonah Jameson, Chip Fields as Rita Conway, Ellen Bry as Julia Masters and Michael Pataki as Captain Barbara.

If you watched the Show’s Intro, you can see why they didn’t make another Live Action Spider-Man series.  But I can’t hate on it.  Truthfully, as a teenage geek, I couldn’t stand the cheap looking costume, and the horrible way they portrayed how Spider-Man shot his webs.  It was like the special effects guys pulled a rope across the room with an invisible string.  It just didn’t live up to the images in my young comic collecting brain at the time.  But now I love the nostalgia of the show, like my friend and podcast crew member Toby-Wan Kenobi.  He loved Spider-Man the series as a little kid.  And I don’t even know why I was being so hard on it, considering I watched other bad-looking super-hero shows like THE HULK and WONDER-WOMAN.

Since I’ve started with a classic Super Hero TV Series for this first Flashback Friday for July, I might was well feature a different Series for each of the Fridays of this month.  Stay tuned for some 70′s and 80′s TV Hero goodness.

[...] Fun fact: The first Spider-Man film is from 1969 and it’s a fan film! I thought fan films were a more recent type thing, but you can see the first fan made Spider-Man flick here.
