FALLING SKIES Season 2 Finale: A More Perfect Union is a Perfect Cliffhanger

It almost seems like the Season 2 of FALLING SKIES just started a few weeks ago, but the 10 episodes season came to a finale with “A More Perfect Union” which aired last night.  Basically, Tom and the 2nd Mass have to take out an alien super weapon that’s almost functional, but it looks like there is no guarantee that anybody will survive the mission.

Before getting into it, I’ll just tell you that even though everyone from the 2nd Mass made it through the episode (well, almost) it ended with a HUGE series cliffhanger.

AY, THERE BE SPOILERS HERE!

To me, this show has been a slow burn.  But there were moments where you said ‘Oh Snap, that was cool’ (or something like that).  The finale had a couple big moments like that.

First, the 2nd Mass decided to go on what appeared to be  a suicide mission to destroy a weapon that Ben said was crazy destructive.  They receive some headwind from the brass, but Captain Weaver says they are going on the mission anyway.  This is right after Ben, Red-eye and their buddies were attacked by what was probably a band of militant Charleston residence.  Some of the skitters were killed but Red-Eye and the others got away.  Oh, and Mayor Manchester offers Tom a seat of leadership in the community, but Tom says he will keep fighting and Charleston isn’t the right place for the 2nd Mass.

So the company go on the mission, and when they sneak into the weapon’s facility, they proceed to set C4 charges. Tom comments on the Weapon not being pointed at Charleston, but at the sky.  Ben answers that the weapon isn’t for us. Hmmmm?  All is going to plan, but of course Karen (creepiest alien controlled girl ever) is ready and waiting.  Tom, his sons Hal and Ben, Anna (who got impregnated by guess who), Captain Weaver and the others were caught and tied up.  But just as Karen starts to use the old Alien Pain Stick, Red-Eye and his forces come in for the rescue.  Everything is chaos, but Red-Eye attacks the head honcho Alien.  Red gets mortally wounded, but Tom ends up using the pain stick against boss alien in a fashion it wasn’t designed for; he beat the alien’s head in.

They all escape with some casualties, including Dai (Peter Shinkoda).  Celebrations arose as the 2nd Mass. returned to Charleston, but the cheers didn’t last for long.  The episode ended with a bunch of alien ships landing in the city.  Ships that Weaver had never seen before.  As the hatch to one of the ships opens, we see a brand new alien walk out, take off his helmet, and smile.

I missed a couple previous episodes, but it didn’t take long for me to get the gist of what was going on in the finale.  Geek Soul Brother wasn’t 100% invested in the show, but after this season, he thinks he can get with the program.  Let’s face it, FALLING SKIES is one of the few truly Sci-fi shows that’s currently on tv.  And I have to admit that it has gotten better, particularly the alien special effects.  I guess we will have to wait until next year to see who these new aliens are, and if they are friend or foe, or both.
