When I saw the poster I had to watch the trailer. What was Julie Delpy and Chris Rock doing together in a movie? And I’m not questioning the whole interracial thing. I had to see what kind of film had one of the funniest comedians co-starring with this French Actress/writer/director. Delpy is returning as her character Marion, a French woman who was in the prequel 2 Days in Paris . She was in a relationship then with a guy named Jack (Adam Goldberg), but now in ‘New York’ she’s connected at the hip with Mingus, Chris Rock’s character. Each of them have kids, so they are one happy family getting along.
But that crazy pairing isn’t the fun part. Just as things are going well for the couple, Marion’s family are coming to visit from France. And also Marion’s ex. Won’t that be fun for Mingus.
Julie Deply wrote and directed this sequel to her 2007 2 Days in Paris. One reviewer that screened it at Sundance thought she did a better job at directing ‘New York’. I always liked Deply’s acting, which is sort of aloof but still works. But I’m most interested in seeing Chris Rock’s performance as the seemingly straight man of the film. He’s the one that’s the fish out of water with Marion’s Father playing jokes (that’s Deply’s real dad), and her fighting sister and Ex-husband (actually, I forgot if Marion and Jack were married or not).
I’m getting a very Woody Allen-esk feel from the trailer, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a character like Chris Rock in a Woody Allen film.
2 DAYS IN NEW YORK will hit theaters in the U.S. on August 10th, 2012.
