80s Scifi on Blu-ray, ALTERED STATES, OUTLAND, BRAINSTORM and Something New

Debuting this week on Blu-Ray we have Sean Connery, Christopher Walken and William Hurt starring in these 1980′s Scifi classics that gave us older geeks some tasty food for the imagination.  Also the ‘Dark Shadows Complete Original Series’ comes with a custom case.  And I picked out some popular recent releases like Warehouse 13 Season 3 and American Reunion.

Outland [Blu-ray] - A federal marshal on an outer-space mining colony uncovers deadly secrets, triggering a showdown. Oscar(R) winner Sean Connery lays down the law in Peter Hyams’ sci-fi sizzler.

This was a good detective story set in the confines of a space station.  People who love 80′s science fiction will remember this Sean Connery classic.  I considered it a great mix of gritty crime drama and scifi.

Altered States [Blu-ray] - Another classic science fiction from the 80s.  Altered States struck my young scifi imagination like a bolt of lightning with questions about the origins of life and its meanings.

William Hurt, in his screen debut, plays the mad scientist who develops a sensory deprivation tank that regresses him to a primal state, after he combines it with a tribal medicine.

Coma [Blu-ray] - Before he created “ER” Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Twister) adapted and directed (his debut behind the camera) this chiller from Robin Cook’s best-seller about a sinister medical conspiracy. Genevieve Bujold, Michael Douglas and Richard Widmark star as doctors caught in its web. – Product Description.

This was actually a 70′s classic that probably had audiences wondering if they were ever going to the hospital again.  You wouldn’t want to end up in a coma just because of a stubbed toe!

Brainstorm [Blu-ray] - Research scientists played by Louise Fletcher and Christopher Walken invent a machine that can record another person’s experiences only to have devastating results when Fletcher records her own death.

This was a forerunner to virtual reality movies like Strange Days and Inception.  But its climax dealt with the experience of life and death more than just being a crime thriller or heist film.  It’s another choice for fans of 80s scifi, or Walken fans, or both.

Dark Shadows: The Complete Original Series (Deluxe Edition) - This deluxe edition boxed set contains every eerie episode of the original Gothic suspense series DARK SHADOWS (1966-1971) plus a wealth of bonus interviews with the stars and creative members that made the supernatural thriller a cult favorite and an enduring television classic.  A pricy price tag of $431.99 this week, but probably worth it to the Dark Shadow Lovers, who get all 131 DVDs with all 1,225 Complete Episodes.

Note: This Deluxe Edition (a second printing) is not serialized and does not include a signed postcard by Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins).

American Reunion (Two-Disc Combo Pack: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

American Reunion DVD

Get ready for “flat-out hilarious, raunchy fun” (Box Office Magazine) as the whole American Pie gang returns to East Great Falls for the first time since their legendary senior year to turn their reunion into the most unforgettable weekend since high school. Old friends will reconnect, old flames will reignite, and everyone will rediscover just how much fun you can pack into one outrageous reunion. – Product Description

Adventure Time: Complete First Season - The Complete First Season DVD. I couldn’t stand when my kids watched this show, but then I laughed every time I watched it with them.  It is the Emmy nominated series that centers on the post apocalyptic adventures of Finn, a human boy with a funny hat, and his friend Jake.

Warehouse 13: Season Three - The mystery solving show with a steam punk edge to it.  Warehouse 13 is quirky and fun.

Return to the mysterious Warehouse for the most thrilling season yet of Syfy’s most popular series ever! Pete, Myka, Claudia, Leena & Artie are joined by new agent Steve Jinks (Aaron Ashmore, Smallville) as they pursue dangerous new missions, and face a powerful new enemy whose vendetta against the Warehouse knows no bounds. - Amazon Editorial Review

Eureka: Season Five - In the small town of Eureka, where crazy experiments always go wrong, Sheriff Carter gets down to business and finds the solution, even though he doesn’t have the highest I.Q. in town.  The last season is almost over, but the DVD comes out Tuesday July 17th right after the finale.

I Kissed A Vampire - In the vein of High School Musical, a desperate teen tries to save himself and the girl he loves after discovering he’s transforming into a vampire.

There are a lot of ‘Glee’ fans and ‘Twilight’ fans out there.  So how could I not include this blend of popular genres in this list.  I haven’t seen it, but my curiosity is up.  All you swooning teens might want to check this out.

Or you can rent it from Amazon’s Instant Video.
